SOUTH HiGH & NEIGHBORHOOD
Revitalizing Iconic South High School
The restored South High School will serve as an anchor on the South side of Youngstown, contributing to the vitality and growth of the community. It will have synergy with the proposed Valley Legends stadium, further enhancing the cultural, educational, and sports landscape of our city.
- Build on the tradition of excellence linked to South High School and establish a motivating environment for education, workforce development, and community cultural events
- Serve as an anchor for renewed development including housing rehab and new construction projects in the neighborhood
- Provide adaptive re-use for an iconic building that is part of the shared history of generations of Youngstown's residents
Belmont Corridor
Youngstown Urban Development partners with the City, Community, and Business Stakeholders to set the stage for redevelopment and economic growth of the Belmont Corridor.
Improving a Key Gateway into the City
- Survey the Belmont Corridor to document issues related to safety, aesthetics, and accessibility to businesses
- Cultivate relationships with stakeholders on the corridor to build a shared vision for the future
- Assist with supplemental grants to improve exterior aesthetics including signage, awnings, lighting, painting, paving, landscaping, and outside customer seating areas
Historic District
Review Historic Preservation Opportunities
Research and plan neighborhood stabilization projects that serve to enhance the vitality of living and working within the Historic Preservation District.
- Assess updates for the Crandall Park-Fifth Avenue and the Wick Park Historic Districts
- Increase focus on high-impact projects that bring vitality to historic district streets and properties that are in a distressed state
- Build partnerships with community, non-profits, and area stakeholders with a vested interest in restoring iconic elements of the historic district
Hayes Apartments
Adaptive Re-Use Project
Repurpose Hayes Junior High into apartments for seniors that retains the historical character and sense of place in the community.
- Provide housing for seniors that is close to amenities and services including Mercy Health, VA Clinic, parks, bus route, and other support services
- Rehabilitate a building that has generations of civic memories and is important to the built environment of the city of Youngstown
- Serve as an economic development catalyst for improving the surrounding neighborhood
